Shared Solar for Sydney Apartments & Strata Buildings

MPV Solar designs strata solar and battery systems across Sydney for apartment buildings, owners corporations and strata managers looking to reduce electricity costs and make better use of shared rooftop space.

Our strata solar assessments consider roof space, electricity usage, metering, common-property loads, shared solar technology, battery storage and current NSW incentives.

MPV Solar provides shared solar for apartment buildings, solar for owners corporations, strata battery storage and tailored solar system design for multi-unit properties.

Can You Install Solar Panels on an Apartment Building?

Yes. Many Sydney apartment buildings and strata schemes can install rooftop solar. The right apartment solar system depends on the building’s available roof space, electricity consumption, metering arrangements, electrical infrastructure and how the generated solar energy will be used.

MPV Solar can assess whether solar should supply individual apartments, common-property electricity or a shared combination of both. Explore our wider Residential Solar Sydney services.

How Does Shared Solar Work for Apartments?

Shared solar for apartments allows electricity generated by a common rooftop solar system to benefit multiple residents within a strata building.

Depending on the design, rooftop solar can help power individual apartments as well as common-area loads such as lifts, lighting, ventilation, pumps and other building services.

The best shared solar solution depends on the building’s metering, electrical configuration, resident usage and solar-sharing technology.

The NSW Government’s current Solar for Apartment Residents program specifically supports eligible shared rooftop solar projects for apartment buildings and multi-unit dwellings.

NSW Solar for Apartment Residents Grant 2026

Eligible apartment buildings can currently access significant funding towards shared solar installations in NSW. The standard Solar for Apartment Residents grant can provide up to 50% of eligible project costs, with funding of up to $150,000 per project.

Eligible buildings in selected suburbs may instead qualify for the Solar for Apartment Residents – Boost program, which can contribute up to 80% of eligible costs, capped at $200,000.

Applications currently close at 5 pm on 4 December 2026, or earlier if available funding is fully allocated. Read MPV Solar’s NSW Solar Rebate for Apartment Residents guide for more information.

Strata Solar Sydney for Owners Corporations

MPV Solar provides solar for owners corporations across Sydney, helping strata committees understand the technical, financial and practical requirements of installing shared rooftop solar. A strata solar assessment can consider system size, estimated solar generation, electricity savings, common-property loads, solar-sharing options, NSW grants and potential battery storage. This gives owners corporations and strata managers clearer information before progressing through formal project approval. The NSW Government’s current Solar for Apartment Residents program specifically supports eligible shared rooftop solar projects for apartment buildings and multi-unit dwellings.

Can Individual Apartments Use Shared Solar?

Yes. Suitable shared solar technology can allow rooftop solar energy to be distributed across individual residential lots rather than limiting the system to common areas. This means solar panels for apartment buildings can potentially benefit residents directly while also supporting common-property electricity consumption. The most appropriate arrangement depends on the site’s metering, electrical infrastructure and energy distribution requirements.

Can Apartment Buildings Install Battery Storage?

Yes. Apartment battery storage can allow a strata building to store excess solar electricity during the day and use more of that energy later. A strata battery may help increase solar self-consumption, reduce grid electricity purchases, support common-property loads and shift solar energy into afternoon or evening periods. MPV Solar can assess whether strata solar only or a combined solar + battery system makes more sense for the building. Learn more about Solar Battery Installation Sydney.

NSW Apartment Battery Incentive 2026

Eligible NSW apartment buildings can now receive an upfront discount for qualifying apartment battery storage systems.Current indicative discounts are approximately 20–30% for an eligible battery-only installation or 30–40% when a battery is installed together with new or additional solar.

To qualify under the current apartment battery incentive, the building generally needs at least four units, and the eligible battery must have usable capacity between 20 kWh and 200 kWh. Where new solar is being installed with the battery, the solar generally needs to be installed within 90 days before or after the battery installation.

This creates a strong opportunity for owners corporations considering strata solar and battery storage together in 2026.

Solar Only or Solar & Battery for Apartments?

Not every strata building needs battery storage. A solar-only apartment system can work well where residents and common areas can consume a high proportion of solar electricity while it is being generated.

A strata solar + battery system may offer more value where excess daytime solar would otherwise be exported while electricity consumption remains high later in the day. MPV Solar can compare both options using the building’s electricity profile, solar potential, metering and available incentives.

What Size Solar System Does an Apartment Building Need?

There is no standard size for solar panels on apartment buildings. The right solar system size depends on the number of residential lots, usable roof space, roof orientation, shading, resident consumption, common-area electricity demand, electrical capacity and metering arrangements.

If battery storage is being considered, the expected surplus solar generation and evening electricity use should also influence system sizing. The objective is to design a strata solar system that can effectively generate, distribute and use the available solar electricity.

Strata Solar for Common Areas

Solar can also be used to reduce electricity costs associated with common property. Typical common-area electricity loads can include lifts, corridor and carpark lighting, ventilation, pumps, access systems and other building services.

For some buildings, common-property solar may provide a straightforward starting point. For others, a shared solar system across apartments and common areas may create greater value.

Strata Solar for Apartments, Townhouses & Multi-Unit Buildings

MPV Solar can assess solar opportunities across a range of strata-managed residential properties. This includes apartment buildings, townhouse complexes, villa developments, multi-unit dwellings and smaller strata schemes across Sydney.

Each project needs to consider the property’s roof ownership, common-property arrangements, electrical infrastructure and metering before the solar system is designed. Explore MPV Solar’s broader Solar Services Sydney.

Strata Solar & Battery Sydney FAQs

Find answers to common questions about strata solar Sydney, shared solar for apartment buildings, solar for owners corporations, NSW apartment grants and apartment battery storage.

Can solar panels be installed on apartment buildings in Sydney?

Yes. Many Sydney apartment buildings can install rooftop solar, subject to suitable roof space, metering, electrical infrastructure and owners corporation approval.

How does shared solar work in an apartment building?

A shared solar system generates electricity from common rooftop panels and can distribute that electricity between eligible apartments and common-property loads, depending on the system design.

Can individual apartments benefit from strata solar?

Yes. Shared solar technology can allow solar electricity to be allocated to individual residential lots as well as common areas.

Is there a solar grant for apartment buildings in NSW?

Yes. The Solar for Apartment Residents program currently provides co-funding for eligible shared solar projects, with standard funding of up to 50% of eligible costs and higher support through the Boost program for qualifying locations.

Read our NSW Solar Rebate for Apartment Residents guide.

When does the NSW apartment solar grant close?

Applications currently close at 5 pm on 4 December 2026, unless funding is fully allocated earlier.

Can an apartment building install a solar battery?

Yes. Suitable apartment buildings can install battery storage to capture excess solar generation and make more of that energy available later.

Learn more about Solar Battery Installation Sydney.

Is there a battery rebate for apartment buildings in NSW?

Yes. Eligible NSW apartment buildings can currently access upfront battery discounts of approximately 20–30% for battery-only installations and around 30–40% where qualifying new or additional solar is installed with the battery.

What size battery can an apartment building install under the NSW incentive?

Yes. Because rooftop solar generally affects common property, the relevant owners corporation approvals need to be obtained before installation.

What size solar system does a strata building need?

The right solar system size depends on roof area, apartment numbers, electricity consumption, common-property usage, metering and how solar electricity will be shared.

Is solar or solar + battery better for a strata building?

It depends on when residents use electricity and how much solar would otherwise be exported. MPV Solar can compare both options before recommending a system.
