Warehouse Solar Installation Sydney

A Guide for Business Owners

Warehouse Solar Installation Sydney

Warehouses have something solar installers love: lots of roof space.

But roof space alone doesn’t determine whether warehouse solar will deliver a strong return.

The biggest opportunity occurs when a large rooftop is matched with significant electricity consumption during the day.

For logistics facilities, distribution centres, cold storage businesses, manufacturing sites and other industrial properties, commercial solar can potentially turn unused roof space into an energy-generating business asset.

Why are warehouses good candidates for solar?

Warehouse properties often offer:

  • large uninterrupted roof areas
  • relatively low shading
  • significant daytime energy consumption
  • long operating hours
  • refrigeration or HVAC loads
  • lighting
  • automated equipment
  • charging requirements for forklifts and vehicles.

Australian businesses currently have considerably less rooftop solar installed than households despite typically using more electricity during the day. That makes warehouses one of the key opportunities in Australia’s emerging commercial solar “missing middle”.

How big should a warehouse solar system be?

There isn’t a standard warehouse solar system size. A small warehouse might need less than 100 kW.

A larger logistics or distribution facility might justify:

System size should be determined using energy data rather than roof size alone. MPV Solar can review interval meter data to understand exactly when your warehouse consumes electricity.

Should you cover the entire warehouse roof with solar?

Not necessarily. Installing the maximum possible amount of solar is not always the best financial solution.

The goal is to balance: generation + self-consumption + export capacity + investment return.

If your warehouse has enormous roof space but relatively low daytime electricity use, covering the entire roof may not produce the strongest commercial return. Conversely, a warehouse with refrigeration, automation, air conditioning, machinery or EV charging may be capable of consuming considerably more solar onsite.

Can solar reduce warehouse operating costs?

Yes. Solar electricity consumed directly onsite reduces the amount of electricity that needs to be purchased from the grid.

This is why solar self-consumption is one of the most important metrics in commercial solar design.

Instead of concentrating only on how much electricity a system generates, MPV Solar looks at how much of that electricity your business can actually use.

Can warehouse solar power EV charging?

Yes. This is becoming increasingly important for:

  • logistics fleets
  • delivery vehicles
  • company cars
  • forklifts
  • staff EV charging.

If your business plans to electrify its vehicle fleet, future EV charging should be considered before selecting the solar system size.

Warehouse solar and the 2026 commercial solar rebate

The proposed expansion of Australia’s commercial solar incentive to systems up to 1 MW could make larger warehouse solar projects more financially attractive. Businesses that previously stopped at approximately 100 kW because of the old incentive threshold should consider reassessing the site. Previously too big for the small-scale solar rebate? Run the numbers again.

Turn Your Warehouse Roof Into a Business Asset

If your warehouse has the roof space and the daytime energy demand, commercial solar could significantly reduce your reliance on grid electricity and lower long-term operating costs.

Warehouse Solar FAQs

Find quick answers to the most common questions Sydney businesses ask about warehouse solar installation, system sizing, rebates, batteries and commercial energy savings.

Are warehouse solar panels worth it?

They can be particularly attractive when the warehouse uses significant electricity during daylight hours.

Can I put solar on a leased warehouse?

Potentially, but approval from the property owner will generally be required and the remaining lease period should be considered in the commercial model.

Can warehouse solar run refrigeration?

Solar can contribute electricity towards refrigeration loads while the system is producing.

Can I expand my existing warehouse solar system?

Potentially. Existing equipment, roof space, network capacity and electrical infrastructure first need to be assessed.

Do warehouse solar systems need batteries?

Not always. The answer depends on when the warehouse consumes electricity and whether storing excess generation delivers a worthwhile return.
