What Sydney Solar Owners Need to Know

More Flexibility for New and Upgraded Solar Systems

Solar export rules are changing across NSW from late 2026, with flexible solar exports being introduced for eligible new and upgraded solar systems. For many Sydney homeowners, this could mean being able to export up to 10kW per phase when the electricity network has capacity, rather than being restricted by lower fixed export limits.

The changes are particularly important if you are planning a new solar installation, adding more solar panels or upgrading an existing solar system.

So, what are flexible exports, who will they affect and what should Sydney solar owners consider before upgrading?

What Are Flexible Solar Exports?

Flexible solar exports allow your electricity network to dynamically adjust how much excess solar electricity your system can send to the grid. Instead of your solar system operating under one low fixed export limit at all times, a compatible smart inverter communicates with the electricity network.

When there is capacity in the local grid, you may be able to export more solar. If the network becomes congested, the export limit can temporarily be reduced.

Importantly, an export limit affects the excess solar sent to the grid. It does not limit the solar electricity you generate and use within your home.

For homeowners considering a larger system, this creates greater flexibility when designing a residential solar system around current and future electricity consumption.

What Is the New 10kW Solar Export Limit in NSW?

There is not one single 10kW export rule applying identically to every NSW property. Your solar export limit depends on your electricity distribution network and connection.

For eligible customers, however, both Ausgrid and Endeavour Energy are introducing flexible export arrangements that can allow exports of up to 10kW per phase.

For a single-phase property, that can mean exports of up to 10kW.

For an eligible three-phase Ausgrid property, it can mean exports of up to 30kW in total, subject to the network’s requirements and the approved system design.

The actual amount exported will also depend on how much solar your system is producing, how much electricity your home is using and whether a battery is storing some of the excess generation.

Endeavour Energy Flexible Exports

From November 2026, Endeavour Energy says flexible exports will become the default connection option for eligible new and upgraded solar systems.

Eligible customers will be able to export up to 10kW per phase most of the time, with the network able to dynamically adjust exports when required to maintain local grid reliability.

A compatible smart inverter, active internet connection and appropriate metering are required.

Homeowners who opt for Endeavour Energy’s fixed export arrangement will instead have exports capped at 1.5kW. The rollout begins from 2 November 2026 in selected postcodes around Campbelltown and Liverpool before requirements are progressively introduced more broadly.

Ausgrid Flexible Exports

Ausgrid is also introducing flexible and fixed export connections for new and upgraded solar systems from late 2026. Under an Ausgrid flexible export connection, compliant systems up to 30kW can be automatically approved to export up to 10kW per phase. This means:

  • Single-phase homes may be able to export up to 10kW
  • Three-phase homes may be able to export up to 30kW
  • Ausgrid can temporarily reduce exports when necessary to maintain local network stability

Ausgrid says flexible exports may be reduced to a minimum of 1.5kW per site when required, although it expects this to occur rarely.

Homeowners choosing an Ausgrid fixed export connection will instead have a fixed export limit of 3kW per system.

If a suitable internet connection is unavailable, a new or upgraded system can still generate solar for use within the property, but exports may initially be limited to a static 1.5kW per system.

Do the New Solar Export Rules Affect Existing Solar Systems?

If you already have solar and are not changing your system, you generally do not need to rush out and modify it because of flexible exports. Existing solar systems that are not being upgraded are generally unaffected by the new flexible export connection requirements.

The changes become more relevant when you:

  • install a new solar system
  • add panels or increase system capacity
  • replace or substantially upgrade an inverter
  • redesign your system as part of a solar and battery upgrade

Why Are Solar Export Limits Changing?

Sydney has significantly more rooftop solar than it did when many older electricity network settings were developed. During sunny periods, large amounts of excess electricity can be exported into local networks at the same time. In some areas, this can create network constraints.

Historically, networks have managed this partly through fixed solar export limits.

Flexible exports provide another approach.

Instead of permanently restricting a system to a relatively low export level, the network can allow higher exports when capacity is available and reduce them only when needed. For solar owners, that potentially provides greater access to available network capacity without compromising grid stability.

Do Flexible Exports Mean I Should Install a Bigger Solar System?

Not automatically. The ability to export more solar makes larger systems potentially more practical for some homes, but export capacity should not be the only factor used to size your solar system.

A well-designed system should consider:

  • your daytime electricity consumption
  • roof space and orientation
  • current and future electricity usage
  • whether you plan to add a battery
  • the property’s single-phase or three-phase supply
  • inverter capacity
  • network connection requirements
  • how much solar you are likely to export

For some homes, the better upgrade may therefore be: More solar + battery storage

rather than simply increasing solar export capacity.

Will My Solar Inverter Need an Internet Connection?

For new and upgraded systems covered by the new arrangements, connectivity will become increasingly important. A compatible smart inverter communicates with the electricity network so the network can manage export limits when necessary.

Ausgrid says new and upgrading systems accessing flexible or fixed exports will need a complying inverter capable of communicating over the internet.

Endeavour Energy also requires eligible flexible export systems to have a compatible inverter and active internet connection.

If your existing system is several years old, this is another reason to have the inverter and overall system assessed before adding panels.

Older systems may also benefit from a broader solar system maintenance and performance check before an expansion is designed.

What Is the NSW Emergency Backstop?

Flexible exports and the NSW Emergency Backstop Mechanism are related, but they are not the same thing. Flexible exports manage how much excess solar can normally be exported into the local network.

The Emergency Backstop Mechanism is a grid-safety measure that allows solar generation or exports to be temporarily reduced in rare emergency conditions when necessary to maintain electricity system security.

The NSW Government says the mechanism is intended as a last resort.

From November 2026, new and upgraded consumer energy systems up to 200kW will also begin being commissioned through the new NSW Consumer Energy Resources Installer Portal as the requirements are progressively rolled out across the state.

Do I need a new inverter for flexible solar exports?

You need a compatible smart inverter capable of communicating with the electricity network. If you are expanding an older solar system, your existing inverter should be assessed before the new system design is finalised.

Can a battery help if my solar exports are limited?

Yes. A battery can store surplus solar electricity that would otherwise be exported, allowing you to use that energy later. Whether a battery makes financial sense depends on your solar production, electricity consumption, tariffs and battery size.
