The important questions are:
- How much solar does your system actually generate?
- How much electricity does your home use during the day?
- How much excess solar are you currently exporting?
- How much electricity do you use in the evening?
- What size battery are you considering?
- Is your existing inverter compatible?
If your solar system produces plenty of excess electricity during the day, adding battery storage may be the logical next step.

Is a 6.6kW Solar System Big Enough for a Battery?
Yes, a 6.6kW solar system can be big enough for a battery. But that doesn’t mean every 6.6kW system should be paired with the same battery.
Two Sydney homes with identical 6.6kW solar systems can have completely different energy profiles. One household may use most of its solar electricity during the day, leaving relatively little excess generation to store.

The most useful figure isn’t simply your system’s rated capacity. It’s your surplus solar generation.
During the day, your solar electricity generally does one of two things: Solar generation → powers your home first → excess solar is exported to the grid
With a battery: Solar generation → powers your home first → excess solar charges the battery → remaining excess may be exported
If you’re regularly exporting significant amounts of solar electricity during the middle of the day, that is a strong indication there may be energy available to store. What If My Existing Solar System Is Too Small?
Installing a battery doesn’t create more electricity. It only stores electricity that is available. This distinction is important.

In that situation, simply installing a large battery may not solve the underlying problem.

Can You Add a Battery to an Existing Solar System?
In many cases, yes. Your solar panels do not automatically need to be replaced just because you want battery storage.
The Australian Government’s current Cheaper Home Batteries Program also allows eligible battery systems to be connected to existing solar PV systems, subject to the program’s technical and eligibility requirements.
The bigger question is how the new battery will integrate with your existing equipment.

Does Your Existing Inverter Matter?
Yes. The inverter can be one of the most important parts of a battery retrofit.
Depending on your existing system and the battery selected, it may be possible to retain your current solar inverter and install an AC-coupled battery.
Other systems may benefit from an inverter upgrade or a different battery configuration.
An older inverter isn’t automatically unsuitable, but compatibility, condition, capacity and current electrical requirements should be assessed before selecting the battery.

How Many Solar Panels Do You Need to Charge a Battery?
There isn’t a fixed number. The number of solar panels needed to charge a battery depends on:
- panel output
- system size
- roof orientation and shading
- weather and seasonal generation
- household daytime consumption
- battery capacity
- how depleted the battery is each day
A home that consumes a large amount of solar electricity during daylight hours will have less electricity available for charging a battery than a home with the same solar system but low daytime consumption.
That’s why simply saying a particular battery needs a certain number of solar panels can be misleading.
The better question is: How much excess solar does my home generate on a typical day?
Should Your Battery Match Your Solar System Size?
Not directly. Solar systems are generally described in kilowatts (kW), while battery storage capacity is generally described in kilowatt-hours (kWh).
They measure different things.
Your solar system’s kW rating describes its generation capacity, while battery kWh describes how much energy the battery can store.
So there isn’t a rule such as: 6.6kW solar = 6.6kWh battery or 10kW solar = 10kWh battery
Battery sizing should instead consider how much surplus solar is available and how much stored electricity your household is likely to use later.
What About an Older 5kW Solar System?
An older 5kW system can still potentially support battery storage. Age alone isn’t enough to determine whether the system needs replacing.
If the panels are performing well and the home regularly exports unused solar electricity, adding a battery may still make sense.
However, if the household’s electricity consumption has increased substantially since the original system was installed, a 5kW system may now be undersized for the home.
It may then make sense to assess: existing panels + inverter + additional solar + battery rather than looking at battery storage in isolation.

Should You Expand Your Solar and Add a Battery at the Same Time?
Sometimes this provides the best outcome. If your household now uses significantly more electricity than when the original solar system was installed, redesigning generation and storage together can create a more balanced system.
For example, additional solar may provide more daytime generation to:
- power your home
- recharge the battery
- accommodate higher future electricity use
- reduce reliance on grid electricity

What About the Federal Battery Rebate?
The Australian Government’s Cheaper Home Batteries Program currently provides support for eligible battery installations connected to new or existing solar systems. Current eligibility includes battery systems between 5kWh and 100kWh nominal capacity, with STCs available on the first 50kWh of usable capacity, subject to program requirements.
But the availability of a rebate shouldn’t determine how large a battery you install. The battery still needs to suit your solar generation, inverter, electricity consumption and long-term energy requirements.
